RAF Size 4 B Type Helmet to a DFC Winner
A very nice size 4 B Type Helmet accompanied by one half of the pay book of F/O Arthur Clifford DFC, the original wartime owner of the helmet and a photograph of him wearing this actual helmet.
The Helmet is in very good condition with nice supple leather retaining all the original colour. The leather covering on the Bennett buckles is intact, the zips are perfect and the original grey AM stamped Sorbo rubber cushions are still soft. I have not re-installed these. Size 4 B Types are very rare.
Also included is a small amount of research material relating to Clifford, a Canadian Observer flying with 162 Squadron RAF on Wellingtons. His DFC Citation reads:
This officer is a first class navigator who has served in both the United Kingdom and Middle East. He has always shown the greatest determination and courage, pressing home his attacks regardless of the difficulties and dangers he has encountered. He has completed 280 operational hours and 37 sorties. Of these 19 were done in the United Kingdom and 18 in the Middle East. As an observer his bombing has always been carried out with the greatest determination and courage and his navigation accurate. In the course of his operations in the United Kingdom and his first three operations in the Middle East, his previous captain of aircraft was awarded a DFC and Bar during the time when F/O Clifford was his observer. Since then he has completed 15 more successful operations.
